What is Scaffolding?
Scaffolding literally means "building scaffolds," which in education translates to providing appropriate support (Stone, 1998). What is appropriate changes as more knowledge and skills are acquired, enabling more independent work. Over time, students receive more responsibility while less support is provided.

Powerful Learning Environment

The characteristics of Deep approach of learning are also found in what we call a powerful learning environment.

Constructive and Cumulative: New knowledge, skills, and concepts are systematically built up. New information integrates with what the student already knows and can do. Gradually, knowledge and skills are broadened and deepened, retaining and expanding earlier knowledge and skills with new information and experiences, resulting in an increasingly complex understanding. Students grasp underlying principles and concepts instead of merely memorizing facts and procedures.
Contextual: Students can apply their knowledge and skills in various contexts and situations, translating what they learn to their field of work. They demonstrate competency in different contexts.
Goal-Oriented: There is a clear image of what one aims to achieve or what is attainable.
Analytical and Critical Thinking: Students develop the ability to critically analyze information, evaluate arguments, and formulate their own insights.
Cooperative and Interdisciplinary Learning: Collaboration and learning from each other are promoted. Additionally, students are encouraged to make connections between acquired knowledge and skills to develop a broader, integrated perspective.
Active Engagement: Students are actively involved in their learning process.
Self-Directed/Self-Regulated Learning: Students take (co-)responsibility for their learning process, set personal learning goals, and reflect on their progress. They reflect on their thinking processes and learning strategies, helping optimize their learning experiences.
